When Kamal first heard about our Norwegian customers—people living in a land of fjords, snow, and long winter darkness—he was fascinated by a question: What would happen if Africa's most ancient tree found itself in a Norwegian winter?
The baobab, often called the "Tree of Life" in Africa, can live for thousands of years. It stands as a symbol of endurance, wisdom, and resilience across the African continent. In Tanzania, these magnificent giants dot the landscape, their thick trunks and sprawling branches creating shelter for countless creatures. They survive droughts, storms, and the relentless African sun—adapting, persisting, thriving.
But what if this ancient African survivor encountered something it had never known? What if it stood not under the savannah sun, but in the quiet, falling snow of a Nordic winter?
This painting is Kamal's answer—and it's breathtaking.
In Baobab in the Snow, a solitary baobab stands rooted in white, windswept terrain. Snow clings to its massive trunk and dusts its bare branches. Behind it, snow-capped mountains rise like sentinels, and a frozen fjord stretches toward the horizon. The sky swirls with winter gray, and snowflakes drift down in silence.
The tree is leafless—as baobabs are during dry seasons—but far from lifeless. Its powerful silhouette commands the landscape. Despite being impossibly far from home, despite the cold it was never meant to endure, the baobab stands. Unbroken. Unyielding. Magnificent.
There's something deeply moving about this image. The tree shouldn't survive here—and yet in Kamal's vision, it does. It adapts. It persists. It becomes part of this new landscape while remaining undeniably, powerfully itself.
This painting speaks to anyone who has ever felt out of place. To immigrants building new lives in foreign lands. To Norwegians who've fallen in love with Africa and carry it in their hearts. To Africans living in Nordic countries, maintaining their roots while adapting to snow and darkness. To anyone who has had to be resilient in unfamiliar territory.
The baobab doesn't lose its identity in the snow—it transforms the landscape by its very presence. The African tree and Norwegian winter don't clash; they create something unexpected and beautiful. Two worlds that seem incompatible discover harmony.
It's a visual metaphor for cultural exchange, for the bridges we build between distant places, for the strength required to stand tall when everything around you is foreign and cold. And ultimately, for hope—the belief that we can not only survive in new environments but thrive, bringing our authentic selves to transform the spaces we inhabit.
You gotta have this one in your collection.
