Our Founder

From the most humblest of beginnings, Edward Saidi Tingatinga, the founder of Tinga Tinga African Art, born in 1932 in a tiny village called Namochelia in Mindu area, near the village of Nakapanya located in the Southern region of Tanzania, slowly and subtlety began a nationwide movement in Tanzania that would revolutionize the way African art and paintings would be made.

At the age of 25 in 1957, Edward Tingatinga left his home village and went to work as a sisal labourer in Tanga region, which is located on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Some of his relatives also joined him in Tanga before Tingatinga moved to Dar es Salaam, a major commercial city of Tanzania, in 1960.

Tinga Tinga African Art began as a simple idea: Using¬†recycled, low-cost materials, like¬†masonite squares, ceramic fragments, and bicycle paint.¬†His style was na√Įve, bordering on surrealistic and humorous; most of his subjects were stereotypical African icons, such as wildlife or savannah landscapes.¬†Edward's Tingatinga's African paintings became very popular among European residents and tourists, and he was subsequently able to transition his previously part time job to a full time profession as an African artist.

Today, this style of African art is made with oil and enamel paints under canvas. Edward Tingatinga died in 1972 after being shot by a police officer during a car chase in a case of mistaken identity. This tragic death was reported the following day in newspapers and the nation realized that Edward Tingatinga was prematurely dead. However, that was not the end of his school.

His legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of the African artists who adopted his style of African painting. His ubiquitous style has been met with great popularity by audiences outside Tanzania who love the unique style and the story behind the brand.

TingaTinga paintings are one of the most popular style of African paintings found in Eastern Africa. What once began as a simple idea for local artisans to survive is today a global brand loved by people globally!

Our Production

Our production process uses a holistic approach to the entire painting process. We focus on financial and social inclusion for all involved. Ethical businesses care about every part, every facet, of their company. From production to the customer, ethical businesses focus on all stakeholders.

On a global scale, ethical manufacturing focuses on the good health, safety, and fair compensation of our workforce. We use export quality canvases, paints and packaging materials throughout our production process to ensure you receive the best quality product. We care deeply about our artists, employing hundreds of talented artisans and transacting with them according to Fair Trade principles.

You do not need to break the bank in the age of the modern internet. Our original, high quality and unique designs are sold at a fraction of the cost that you’d expect on the high street, since we do not follow the outdated retail model.

We leverage our unique heritage to build a worldwide market-leading brand. Everything we do is aimed at applying the unique cultural arts we have practiced here in Tanzania for millennia. In doing so, we preserve important cultural assets in our country.

Here in Tanzania, we have limited resources, and everything is valuable since it is scarce. Everything has a purpose even if not the original purpose it was intended for - and if not, one can be found for it. For us, it's equal parts ingenuity and resourcefulness that equals true ethical practice. This is how we have been able to survive and thrive till the present time and this is how we will continue to thrive in the future.

Our ultimate ambition is to make a powerful contribution to the cultural life of Tanzania and the continent at large by collaborating with creative and marginalized communities to offer extraordinary African art experiences that engage, challenge and inspire diverse audiences all over the world. We are united by a common passion to offer authentic and meaningful experiences for people through African art; and a shared belief that through art we know ourselves, each other and the world, more deeply.

We are dedicated to achieving our vision in a socially-responsible manner, with the greatest level of business ethics.

Our Ethos

One of our main objectives is to encourage an awareness of the holistic nature of the African artist, whose inspiration derives from the highest sources and whose skill and dedication creates masterpieces which we can all recognize as part of our national heritage.

The gallery rekindles the awareness that form, pattern and colour in traditional arts are not simply aesthetically pleasing nor merely tools for design, but that embody a profound beauty; the beauty of the permanent that shines through in the world of the transient. With the purchase of our artworks, our customers can experience the beauty of Africa ‚Äď a spiritual, sacred beauty, connecting the whole of creation.

Our African art gallery's holistic ethos holds that our artists are able to monetize their efforts and entirely provide a means of living and sustenance.

The kind of originality nurtured and respected at our gallery goes beyond focusing on producing exceptional artwork by particular individuals. Here, originality means ‚Äėfrom the origin‚Äô, returning to first principles as well as cultural and artistic roots, nurturing them and bringing forth new shoots. It is this understanding of originality which enables the artists at the gallery to create contemporary arts through living traditions.
