Into the Deep

The ocean holds a world we rarely see. In this vivid, large-format canvas, S. Omar pulls it to the surface — a swirling ecosystem where a leopard shark curves past a decorated octopus, reef fish dart between coral, and two sharks command the deep blue with quiet authority.

At the heart of the composition sits the octopus — the painting's undisputed soul. Its eight arms spiral outward in every direction, threading between creatures and coral like the roots of something ancient. But look closer: its body is not simply painted — it is illuminated. Floral mandalas bloom across its mantle, delicate pink flowers and turquoise geometric patterns that recall the intricate craft of Persian tilework or Indian block printing. It is a wild creature rendered as a sacred object.

What makes this work striking is its tension between wildness and ornamentation. Each creature is rendered with biological confidence, yet layered with intricate folk-art patterning — floral motifs on the octopus's mantle, geometric lines along the shark's flank. The deep cobalt background gives the composition a nocturnal intensity, while the scattered shells and lotus flowers anchor it to something ancient and decorative. The blue lotus flowers — half-open, floating without water — introduce a dreamlike note. They do not belong in the ocean, and yet they feel completely at home here.
