DESCRIPTION:

This painting captures the bustling energy and vital importance of Muhimbili Hospital in Tanzania, one of the largest and most important medical facilities in the region. Through the masterful hand of artist Steven Mkumba, viewers are transported into the heart of the hospital, where patients of all ages and backgrounds are receiving critical care and treatment.

Muhimbili National Hospital, located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is one of the largest hospitals in the country and serves as the main referral hospital for Tanzania's southern and eastern regions. The hospital was established in 1910 as a small cottage hospital and has since grown to become a major center for medical education, research, and clinical care.

Today, Muhimbili National Hospital has more than 1,500 beds and offers a wide range of medical services, including cardiology, neurosurgery, oncology, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. The hospital also has a dedicated emergency department and critical care unit, and it plays a critical role in responding to major health crises such as outbreaks of infectious diseases and natural disasters.

Muhimbili National Hospital is also home to Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), one of the largest medical schools in Tanzania. The hospital's close collaboration with the university allows for innovative research and education initiatives that contribute to the advancement of healthcare in the country and beyond.

At the center of the painting, we see a group of doctors and nurses gathered around a bed, attending to a patient with a serious illness. The doctors' faces are etched with concentration and concern, while the patient's face is peaceful and resigned. It is a poignant reminder of the difficult and often life-saving work that healthcare professionals undertake every day.

Beyond this central scene, we see a kaleidoscope of other activities and treatments taking place. In one corner of the painting, we see a dental clinic, where patients sit in chairs while dentists and dental assistants work on their teeth. The equipment is modern and sophisticated, a testament to the high standard of care that patients receive at Muhimbili.

In another corner, we see a mother holding a newborn baby, with a doctor and nurse standing nearby. It is a joyous scene, a reminder that even in the midst of sickness, death and suffering, new life is constantly being born.

Throughout the painting, we see patients of all ages and backgrounds receiving care for a wide variety of conditions. Some are receiving chemotherapy for cancer, while others are being treated for tuberculosis, HIV, or other illnesses. We see patients lying in beds, hooked up to monitors and IVs, while others sit in chairs or stand up, receiving injections or having their blood pressure taken.

Perhaps most striking of all is the scene at the entrance of the hospital, where ambulances are constantly arriving with patients in need of urgent care. The hospital's reception area is a flurry of activity, as nurses and orderlies rush to get patients offloaded from the ambulance and into the hospital.
