The First Shadow

DESCRIPTION:

Before the calf learned the smell of rain, he learned the smell of her.

She was the first large thing in his world — larger than the trees, larger than the sky that peeked through the orange blossoms above. He did not yet know what danger was. He only knew that when he walked close to her, the ground felt more certain beneath his feet.

The birds had gathered that morning, as they always did when she passed. They came in colors that had no names — birds from the high branches and the far valleys, drawn not by the flowers but by something older. A stillness she carried. A gravity.

The calf pressed his trunk to hers. A question without words.

Are you there?

She did not stop walking. But her trunk curled back to meet his.

I am here. I have always been here.

Above them, the orange tree dropped a single blossom. It fell slowly, the way important things do, and landed in the grass where no one would notice it — except that everything had already been made more beautiful by its falling.

They walked on.

The birds watched.

The tree let go of another bloom.

And the world, for that moment, was exactly the right size.
